Coronavirus & the Pluto-Jupiter conjunction

We can see the light glittering at the end of the tunnel Narrm…

The news that an easing of restrictions would be announced for Melbourne on Sunday, with only one new case and no deaths, coincided exactly with Saturday‘s New Moon in Libra in the sign of balancing & relationships. New Moons are best known for instigating new beginnings and that feels quite literal right now. But with its many complex aspects to the most challenging planetary configurations of 2020 this lunation was focused more on release, relinquishing and elimination, which is also what we’ve been doing. Whatever is extinguished in the lead up to a new moon tends not to come back, so although our numbers are still a little shaky, it looks tentatively hopeful that we could outrun a third wave🤞🏾But not without a whole lot of continued diligence. There are still strong astrological indications of a third wave in the weeks and months ahead, and we’ll continue to see numbers climb globally in mid November.

The meeting of Jupiter and Pluto has been associated with plagues and pandemics throughout history. The Black Death, which radically transformed 14th Century Europe with the deaths of around 50 million people or 60% of the continental population, involved a Jupiter/Pluto conjunction in Aries in 1347. The Russian Plague of 1771, which was the last major outbreak of the bubonic plague, involved a Jupiter/Pluto conjunction in Capricorn. The 1918 Spanish flu, which resulted in 50 million deaths globally, involved a Jupiter/Pluto conjunction in Cancer. The HIV/AIDS epidemic, which resulted in 65 million infections and 25 million deaths worldwide, involved the 1981 Jupiter/Pluto conjunction in Libra, also in the sign of relationships.

In 2020 the Jupiter/Pluto conjunction takes place three times in Capricorn. The first two conjunctions occurred in April and June and corresponded with a huge rise in case numbers around the world. The final of these conjunctions is exact from November 8-13. We’ll need to be extra careful throughout November so that we can really enjoy each other this Summer 🌞

Stay focused legends, we can do it 💗

Libra New Moon 2020

This week we’re moving through what many astrologers have suggested could be one of the most challenging and important passages of 2020. And that’s saying something, I know. All 10 planets in our solar system are making hard aspects to one another, but as always there are silver linings. With the exception of Mars opposing the Libra Sun/New Moon conjunction on Saturday October 17 (6:30am EST), which is the most potent energetic focus of the week, all planets are simultaneously making aspects that enable us to turn these heightened tensions into exceptional manifestation opportunities.

We’ve been building up the muscle and the maturity to deal with the epic challenges, changes and emotional pressures that 2020 has thrown in our paths. We’ve made it through some intensely difficult weeks and months and they’ve led us to important realisations. We’ve got a strong inkling about how we want our lives to look and we’ve got ideas about how to make that happen. The lead up to this week’s Libra New Moon focuses our attention on identifying what we need to release, revise and/or integrate in order to live into those possibilities fully.

As Pluto is reactivated by an exact square to retrograding Mars on October 14 and triggered by the New Moon/Sun conjunction on Saturday, destructive patterns of behaviour that we’ve developed in response to trauma, which no longer reflect who we are or are wanting to be, may be triggered. But there’s an extraordinary healing opportunity being magnified through these planetary dynamics. With Mercury retrograding in Scorpio from October 15 and opposing Uranus, the planet that governs the radical resolution of irresolvable differences, the power to transform situations that we’ve been grappling with all year suddenly becomes available.

Mercury in Scorpio acts as Hermes the Psychopomp, who ushered souls to Pluto’s realm in the underworld. The ancients considered the land of the dead to be the source of dreams and worldly abundance and this descent to the site of our suffering, fury, fear and shame both frees up our vision and allow us to re-emerge from the psychic realms of our karmic wounding richer for having reckoned with the truth of who we truly are. In emptying our souls of the secrets that have been poisoning us, they become a source of incredible richness, and Pluto, lord of our darkest fears, reveals himself to be something entirely unexpected: a god of total transformation who shows compassion for our suffering, rewards us richly for our courage and delivers unimagined healing.

Deep, courageous, honest communications, in which we hold ourselves and those we care about accountable, can become vehicles for profound transformation now. Counselling, therapy, journalling and divination will also provide powerful pathways for insight during this transit. It could be a week and month of revelations. Mars is at its closest point to the Earth this week (13-15 Oct) and opposes the Sun (exact on Oct 14). The effects could last a week. Intensity is at maximum pulse. We may feel angrier, more frustrated and exhausted or alternatively more powerfully motivated and super-charged. The Sun’s opposition to Mars either heightens tendencies for exaggerated overreaction or illuminates where we may have overreacted in the past. We’re reminded to look for the deeper emotions that lie beneath reactivity and rage, at the fear, hurt, sorrow and experiences of powerlessness that are calling for attention and redress. Tending to them with compassion allows us to channel Martian energy into epic feats of personal courage that are required now for us to truly be ourselves.

Even Venus, who rules the Libra New Moon, is conspiring towards transformative interpersonal revolution. Her intentions are for harmony, balance and peacemaking, but it’s a shit-show out there, so she must raise her voice to be heard above the fray. Her critical faculties are heightened in Mercury-ruled Virgo allowing her to clearly identify the factors blocking the flow of love. We will be wise to listen. As she opposes Neptune in Pisces the fears and illusions that we’ve been projecting onto others suddenly become illuminated. Neptune is considered the higher octave of Venus, and while she represents harmonious interpersonal love, Neptune represents the visionary, transcendent experience of love that centres on compassion and forgiveness. In this world-changing epoch, characterised by seemingly intractable divisions and irresolvable differences, we’re being offered a vital opportunity to upgrade our vision and understanding of love.

Saturday’s New Moon invites us to make space for these new possibilities by honouring and giving thanks to what is leaving, to make rituals of the big and small beauties we want to nourish and preserve in our lives, to be bold in our intentions for the future, and sit tight.

A shift in existing dynamics

This weekend delivers more super-charged astrological events, and those of us with planets between 17 and 22 degrees in any of the Cardinal signs are more likely to feel both the intensity and the opportunities. The most challenging of these aspects are counterbalanced by some exceptionally supportive ones and if we can make use of them in combination they promise significant growth.

On Saturday October 10 a Grand Cross in the Cardinal signs presents powerful opportunities to continue our progress in relation to some of the more challenging issues we’ve been dealing with to date. Cardinal energy leads us into new cyclical territory and this week’s events could signal a shift in existing dynamics. There’s considerable tension being exerted here but if we can sit with it quietly for long enough it should motivate powerful, transformative action.

As the Sun in Libra opposes Mars in Aries the tensions that exist in relationship dynamics are further illuminated. Mars will remain in inferior opposition to the Sun for most of October and in this reactive retrograding state we’re advised to choose our battles wisely and to focus flammable energy into the goals that really matter to us most. Though the moon is in her rulership in Cancer, she directly opposes the patriarchal heavyweights in Capricorn and this could trigger emotional security issues and defensiveness. Seek out a safe and cosy space to retreat when things feel overwhelming.

The influence of a Grand Water Trine provides excellent support by encouraging deep feeling and reflection, creativity and spiritual insight. Mercury in Scorpio encourages us to look beneath the surface of frictions for hidden messages while Neptune in Pisces emphasises the mystical, visionary potential of listening in, and the moon in Cancer promotes depth of feeling, home comforts and bonding with those we care about most.

On Sunday October 11 the Sun squares Jupiter in Capricorn. We’re cautioned against taking too much on and/or letting our egos get the better of us but we could also feel pushed to take a risk in an area we’ve been afraid to venture and find that it increases our confidence to pursue an exciting course of action. Creative activities are especially favoured here and further supported by another Grand Trine in Earth, which lasts until October 17 increasing the possibility of outside support for such developments. Venus in Virgo, Uranus in Taurus, and Jupiter/Pluto/Saturn in Capricorn indicate unexpected creative innovations that improve our quality of life into the future especially if we plumb the hidden depths of our psyches for inspiration.

The moon in Leo squares Mars in Aries and opposes the Capricorn planets to form a T-Square on Sunday as well. Self-expression, creativity and intuition are once again emphasised as beneficial outlets to channel tensions resulting from the simultaneous desire and inability to take action due to circumstances beyond our control. The extra benefit of these challenges we’re encountering is that we’re more likely to take advantage of the less intense but more beneficial opportunities when they present. Grand Trines signify such easy flow of energies that we’re often too lazy to even bother harnessing them. Under the pressure of these more challenging influences we’re more likely to make use of the talent and opportunity they represent because doing so will also bring us relief 🌟🌞🌓🌏

Plutonic riches

Although the slow-moving transpersonal planets Saturn, Pluto and Jupiter have driven this year’s extraordinary events, I can’t help thinking of Mars amongst the faster moving personal planets as the main actor of 2020. He’s like the deeply flawed hero in an extremely long and bizarre arthouse action movie who’s prone to selfishness, violent outbursts and foolish impulsivity although he has a heart of gold, and the challenges he confronts during the course of the drama will bring him to his knees and make him a hero.

This week we reach another threshold of the plot. Mars squares off with lord of the underworld Pluto, whose discovery coincided with the rise of depth psychology and the creation of the atom bomb. In this encounter our hero must face the forces of domination and control that are both unresolved in his own psyche and mirrored in his confrontations with the world. To succeed he must choose a path of action that reflects his maturity as a hero by first facing in himself what he fears the most.

In mythology, Pluto presided over the realms of the dead, which unlike Christian hells, were rich and fertile domains populated with treasures - plouton in Greek meant wealth - riches both of the human psyche and the earth itself. Pluto was both an arbiter of justice who avenged the crimes committed against the dead and a god of fearsome reckoning whose name was unutterable in ancient times; a god of extreme transformation and an ally to those who, having been brought to their knees in agony and despair, were offered riches that are only attainable when one loses everything.

In addition to this confrontation, the squaring gods form a tense Hammer of Thor aspect to our hero’s love interest Venus who acts as the focal point for this stressful encounter. At the same time Mercury the messenger makes an exact opposition to the great awakener Uranus in Venus-ruled Taurus, and Venus and Mercury form a finger of god with Chiron the healer. Venus is multitasking like hell in Virgo. It’s her least favourite place to be but she’s best situated to do this kind of work in the sign of healing and service. The quest it seems is a deep and profound transformation through confrontation with issues that lie beneath the surface. She urges us to identify, then correct the deeper issues that are in the way of love.

Although deeply challenging, these issues are coming to the fore in order to be resolved. With Mars retrograding until mid November, we’re cautioned once again against aggressive reactivity: strategy will be crucial to win the long game. Given that Hammer of Thor aspects can lead to the feeling of being harshly criticised and that Venus is more critical than usual in Virgo, we’re reminded to couch our constructive criticisms in compassionate language both as an act of service to ourselves and others.

With the Mercury/ Taurus opposition today there’s a strong possibility of more dramatic revelations and plot twists. We could see secrets revealed about financial or other power abuses, and personally we could experience strong intuitive insights coming suddenly to awareness. It’s an excellent time for brainstorming strategies and ideas in preparation for the next act, and we might even receive some positive and surprising news about money…

Unearthing treasures

The greater benefic Jupiter, planet of expansion & amplification makes a sextile to Neptune, planet of visionary ideals, intuition, creativity, dreams, wishes, mysticism & spirituality, in its own sign of Pisces today October 5. It’s a transit that lasts until October 14 & offers us a subtle & luminous window of creative &/or spiritual/intuitive opportunity. It’s the third & final time that the ancient & modern rulers of Pisces will connect in this way for 2020.

Although debilitated in Capricorn, the sign that governs structures, Jupiter has been helping us develop foundations for a dream we’re hoping to bring into being (Neptune in Pisces). With the two planets in such harmonious aspect now, we want to listen carefully to the intuitions & insights that come in, without holding on too tightly to the information we receive. These energies are still in a process of flux & Neptune governs fantasy & illusion as well as wisdom. We’re encouraged to enjoy the visionary insights without pouring concrete into the foundations just yet.

Speaking of which, Pluto, the great revealer, lord of destruction & creation, & dark ordeals, finally goes direct today as well, having retrograded in Capricorn since April 25. The Lord of the underworld has been tearing down structures in our lives that were long due for total architectural overhaul. The rot in the foundations has had us dreaming of something greater, with bigger windows.  As Pluto moves slowly forward we begin to glimpse the ways in which the processes of collapse & restructuring, which have occurred for us this year, have been transforming us, revealing aspects of our power that were previously hidden.

Pluto moves into square with Mars on Thursday & we may see the surfacing of more buried emotion this week where issues of power & domination, trauma & grief have played out as a major story in some area of our lives. Don’t lose heart in the maelstrom of such deep feelings. This hugely important & transformative process is happening exactly as it’s meant to. Keep an eye out for priceless buried treasures unearthed in the demolition.

Manifestation opportunities

Prepare your self-care kits dear ones, we’ve embarked on an epic ride…

Mars and Saturn formed their second exact square for the year yesterday on September 28th, continuing a story that began for us collectively and individually on around the 24th August. The first square coincided with the police shooting of Jacob Blake, the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the Kenosha protests in which police backed armed white vigilantes and a white 17 year old opened fire on unarmed primarily black protesters, and the extension of Victoria’s state of emergency laws, which unlike the other examples was instigated for the purposes of public safety but nonetheless provoked bitter backlash and ire about the repressive influence of the powers that be.

This time around Mars and Saturn are both retrograding, which means they’re closer to the earth and exerting a stronger influence. It could lead to more reactionary violence, systemic injustice and repression at a societal level. However, there’s a powerful opportunity available to us personally if we can consciously direct its influence in the areas that matter to us most. Squares produce enormous tension that we feel compelled to resolve through the creation of tangible, material solutions. This makes them potent, albeit deeply challenging, manifestation opportunities. Looking back at what was was coming to light for us individually in late August could help us to take decisive and mature action to change the structures of our lives that are being impacted now, as well as the power dynamics that surround them.

As always, the cure for what ails us can be found in the higher expression of the energies we’re directly confronting. We may feel deeply triggered in this re-emerging scenario, but the two planets offer us the medicine we need as well as the warning. Saturn counsels patience and strategic thinking, demands that we follow the rules, and offers us extra reserves of discipline and staying power. Above all he wants us to take responsibility, to be accountable for our actions and achieve maturity. Retrograding Mars compels us to abstain from angry reactivity at any cost, cautions us against acting impulsively and encourages us to focus on aligning our actions with the power manifest in our desires. Looking to the past to determine the courses of action that did and didn’t work, particularly in the areas being triggered, is powerful use of retrograding Mars energy. But most importantly it affords us a vital opportunity to understand how we may have previously abandoned ourselves in order to get clear about what we truly want. Saturn represents the reality of what is; Mars shows us what we desire most. The question is: what needs to change in our lives in order to realise what we want?

Inflamed Mars energy can be dangerously reactive but it can be channelled into physical activities and/or projects we feel passionate about to excellent effect. And there’s an even more potent opportunity to wield this energy now for transformation. As Pluto slows down to a standstill this week, preparing for its own square to Mars on October 8, it gains far greater intensity, triggering unresolved traumas and amplifying their patterning in our lives. But as lord of the underworld, Pluto beckons us to probe beneath the surface of our anger in order to understand the issues of power and powerlessness, trauma and shame that lie at its root in order to transform them. Pluto was the god of death and the afterlife but also of riches. This is not easy work, but it provides us with the means to heal and purify the psychic miasma of our deepest wounds, to transform its putrescent material into fertile earth, and to yield precious wealth from the rocky substructure of our experiences.

With Mercury’s move into Scorpio yesterday, further emphasis is placed on thinking and communicating deeper issues beneath the surface. Mercury the Psychopomp can aid us in the unravelling of toxic beliefs that are both derived from and prevent healing our karmic wounds, and this will be especially powerful when Mercury goes retrograde on October 15. With Mercury currently in shadow, we should be backing up our devices and taking care of any mechanical, technical, business issues that have already been giving us hints. If we don’t pay attention to the messages we’re receiving now about what needs work and attention the retrograde period will force us to deal with them in far more frustrating ways. We may feel more emotional during Mercury’s stay in Scorpio, and there’s another warning here about resorting to manipulation in our communications. We may be more inclined towards secrecy or to wanting to expose the truth and the Scorpionic energy will help us to get to the bottom of secrets and other mysteries, especially relating to abuses of power. This is an excellent time to engage in counselling, psychology, astrology and other forms of therapy and divination that deepen understanding.

On Wednesday September 30, Saturn finally stations direct, which brings us a modicum of relief but it probably won’t last for long. Friday October 2 (7am EST) delivers us an immensely powerful full moon in the sign of the warrior god, Aries. It continues another story that began with the Aries new moon of March 24 when Mars was back at 25 degrees of Capricorn alongside Pluto at 24 and Jupiter at 23, with Saturn having just moved into 0 degrees of Aquarius. It marked the onset of a new global era under the influence of Covid. Full moons are lunar/sun oppositions, which bring axis issues into scrutiny, and on Friday the sun focuses our attention on a dynamic encounter between self (Aries) and other (Libra), which was initiated with the new moon in March. It’s worth reviewing journal entries to recap on what was emerging personally at that time in order to gain a better understanding of what we need to take action on now. The full moon is also closely conjunct retrograding Chiron ‘the wounded healer’ which indicates that any painful issues that do surface during this lunation offer powerful potential for healing and insight. Chiron’s symbol, which resembles a key, signifies the idea that our wounds, when understood, present the means by which we can unlock our true potential.

Although the full moon is occurring in the earlier degrees of Aries, Mars is amplifying its energies nonetheless. That energy is further intensified by an exact conjunction with Eris, sister of Mars and ostracised warrior goddess of strife, and a close conjunction with Black Moon Lilith, who was demonised for refusing subservience. Collectively they’re adding even more social justice warrior chilli to the mix than usual. Thankfully, Venus makes a beautiful trine to Mars, Eris and Lilith all this week, which offers soothing relief and support through the tumult of all of this aggravated emotion. If and when we feel overwhelmed by anger or grief, we will find relief by lavishing Venusian attention on ourselves this week. When Venus moves into Virgo on Saturday we can make an enormous difference by offering this kind of attention to others as well. When nerves are frayed, take quiet walks in nature, cook delicious meals, garden, make your home a more comfortable, decluttered and beautiful place, soak in scented baths, brew chai, pick flowers, make practical rituals of physical touch.

Finally, Pluto stations direct at 22 degrees of Capricorn on Monday 5th October, the same degree he was occupying in January when the first exported cases of Covid-19 were documented globally. All three planets - lords of 2020 - Saturn, Pluto and Jupiter are now moving direct, but they’re covering ground they’ve already moved through this year so on some level we know what to expect.

Equinox 2020

Following fast on the heels of last week’s Virgo new moon, many of us have already been reeling from the magnitude and immensity of far more difficult energies that have been circulating in our lives personally and collectively. Health crises, the loss of loved ones, mounting tensions and tormented grappling with ways and means of communicating difficult truths have felt overwhelming at times for many of us this week.

The issues being triggered for each of us now are taking place in areas of our lives where change, growth and improvement have already been underway for all of 2020. These processes need our continuing tender care and attention, and the critical eye and secateurs of a gardener, for the remainder of the year. The pressure of these events in combination with the practical priorities of the recent Virgo new moon offer us extra impetus to prepare for the escalating energies of the next two months with excellent self-care rituals for body, heart and mind.

With Mars and Mercury squaring the Capricorn planets, and Mercury opposing retrograding Mars, we may still be feeling the need to speak our truth about an injustice whilst fearing that our anger might burn the house down to the ground. Self-care includes checking in with trusted loved ones before launching missiles. There’s an opportunity to use this fiery energy to cook up something new as long as we turn the flame down low and pay attention to the recipe. What is it that we actually want to create from the ingredients we have at hand? This need for gentle heat is further emphasised by a fire trine on Wednesday between the Moon in Sagittarius, Venus in Leo and Mars conjunct Black Moon Lilith in Aries (with Eris following only a couple of degrees behind). It indicates an easy flow of energies if we can avoid dramatic overreactions and acting impulsively in anger. Thankfully, we have extra support in this regard too with a Finger of God (or Yod) aspect on Wednesday taking place between Neptune, Jupiter and Venus. It indicates that any effort we make to bring calm to a fiery situation this week will deliver results, and could even lead to euphoric insights.

With the Sun squaring the Moon’s nodes and simultaneously opposing Neptune in a Mutable Cross, it’s crucial to remember that appearances may not reflect the reality now. Our individual willingness to question our own beliefs about the situations we’re facing, to remain open to new information coming in, and to adapt our thinking towards universal truths will hasten the processes of transformation that are occurring at both personal and societal levels over the next 12 months. With the sun opposing Neptune in Pisces, grief may be close to the surface but it also brings us closer to those profound truths with which we’re needing to realign. We might be experiencing greater confusion and self-doubt, or feel carried away by stories that intensify our anxieties end up proving false. Again this mutable configuration offers us a hugely powerful opportunity to transform the beliefs about ourselves that are keeping us trapped within old ways of thinking and being.

It’s apt in light of today’s Spring/Autumn Equinox (11:30pm EST 22 September) which announces the beginning of a new season as we move into Cardinal Libran energy. Under the influence of Venus-ruled Libra our attention is focused towards finding balance in relationship - with ourselves, our loved ones, our communities and society as a whole. We’re nourished by the sweetness of social connections, and more inclined towards diplomacy and beauty in our communications. As Venus in Leo quintiles Neptune in Pisces and simultaneously trines Chiron in Aries this week, there’s also a powerful potential to use art and mystical practices for accelerating healing and insight.

As the energies prepare to intensify, we benefit from asking ourselves how we might ground this sacred work of balancing in the everyday. What guiding sources of wisdom, inspiration and mindfulness can we draw on to help support our mental processes, emotional responses and overwhelmed nervous systems in times of increased stress? How can we continue to draw beauty and connection into the mundane rituals of our days? By cooking delicious food with our families, engaging in loving conversations with friends, divining for insights by candlelight, walking daily in nature, making poetry of difficult feelings and/or lazily meditating in bed etc we may be better able attune to the profound and mysterious opportunities that are simultaneously coexisting within the complex realities of this epic and unsettling time…

Perfecting

We’re blessed again with another sweet lunation this week with the new moon in Virgo on September 17 (9pm EST) offering more rich opportunities to grow into our power. Jupiter, the Great Benefic, god of providence and good fortune, has finally gone direct, and although he’s still debilitated in Capricorn his movement forward sweetens the feeling of relief we receive from a trine with Uranus in Taurus and the new moon in Virgo. With a bit of effort, it promises the birth of something truly new and improved in important areas of our lives relating to work, health, and the rituals of our daily living.

New moons signal the initiation of a new cycle of growth, and in Virgo, this one focuses our sights on what we can improve, reorganise and refine in order to live a more beautiful life. Virgo focuses on perfecting the gifts we’ve derived from the harvest of our lives. What do we have in our storerooms that needs to be processed, refined and preserved? What rotten material needs to be composted and returned to the earth? How we can improve the systems we’ve set in place for getting stuff done in order to make them less menial and gruelling and more supportive of the rich and nourishing lives we want to live?

Virgo’s associated with the ancient harvest goddesses, with the work of gathering crops, sorting produce and discerning for quality and practical use. She pays attention to detail, asks critical questions, notices the source of problems and develops better systems in response. Although Virgoan energy is often criticised for this tendency towards criticality, in her highest expression Virgo is focused on the goal of making things better for everyone. Virgo reminds us that nothing in our experience is wasted: the fat olives are preserved for eating but the small tough ones can still be pressed for oil; first virgin pressings are luscious and pure, but subsequent pressings make delicious shallow-frying oil; even rotten refuse makes for rich and fertile soil.

In her highest manifestation Virgo is also associated with health, with a strong body nourished with the fruits of the earth and physical work. But with retrograding Mars in Aries squaring the power planets in Capricorn, she may be calling us to pay more urgent attention now to the causes of ill health, pressing us to transform and improve our diets, exercise regimes and work habits, to eradicate what’s harmful and enhance what nourishes us at all levels. As the ruler of Virgo, Mercury also highlights the ways in which our thoughts directly impact our health. With the new moon trining Saturn, Pluto and Jupiter we’re being encouraged to contain and eliminate negative thoughts and to establish more generous patterns of relating to ourselves.

As Mars continues to face off with the Capricorn planets in a crisis of action, Mercury squares them in a crisis of consciousness. Mercury the messenger compels us to pay close attention to the information coming in this week. It may function as a kind of status report on our progress. Depending on how honest we’ve been with ourselves, communication from another may bring issues to the surface that we’ve been sweeping under the rug. Although this may be difficult to face, taking responsibility for our actions will expand our perception of a situation that leads to enormous growth. If on the other hand we haven’t been speaking up for ourselves, Mars retrograde provides extra impetus to do so now. It’s crucial to avoid violence, angry outbursts and aggression, however, because the initiators of such action always lose during a Mars retrograde period, and because Saturn still has the upper hand, he’s likely to come down with repressive force. But there’s extra help here for those who need to speak their truth. Mercury in Libra answering to Venus in Leo promises good fortune if we can find a way to communicate creatively with a loving intention for mutual growth.

This dynamic feeds into the work we’re being asked to do at a collective level too. Mercury rules the north node in Gemini, which indicates that our positive forward trajectory for the next year ahead will depend on our ability to critically reflect on unconscious, habitual, long-standing, deeply held beliefs to determine whether they really hold up in the light of all the available information. With the new moon squaring its own nodes (the points where the moon’s orbit intersects earth’s), we’re being offered an opportunity to rectify an aspect of our collective karma, which relates to belief. Our success moving forward will depend on how curious we can be about other points of view and how willing we are to relinquish the idea that we’re right.

Because this new moon occurs in the latter degrees of Virgo, there’s a maturity to these energies, which is reflected both in our greater ability to understand what actions are necessary and to implement them more effectively with joy, integrity and a deep and abiding respect for ourselves. With so much emphasis on the work needing to be done, Virgo also reminds us to stop and enjoy the fruits of our labours, to bask in the warmth of the sun, to honour ourselves for the gargantuan efforts made thus far and to express our gratitude to those who have served us in all areas of our lives.

The new moon quinquinx to Mars could also see us reprioritise our commitments for the coming month so that we don’t become overburdened by taking too much on. But with visionary Neptune quintile Venus in Leo what we do choose to commit our energy to now is likely to result in something truly beautiful, and possibly even transcendent.

Wrestling with demons: the business end of 2020

Last week’s full moon offered us some sweet celestial reprieve but it certainly wasn’t all that was going on in the skies and for some of us the energy was intense. Many of us with planets near 11 degrees Virgo, 25 degrees Capricorn and 25 degrees Aries, experienced a ‘smiting’ under the influence of a ‘Hammer of Thor’ aspect, which brought news about an ongoing issue we’ve been dealing with that we hoped had gone away. The word ‘smiting’ is connected to ‘smithing’, the beating of hot metal on an anvil, and the process by which raw materials are transformed into tools of functional value. So be encouraged if you’re feeling like beaten metal, that you’re being actively transformed in this process, and that what you will come out with on the other side will be greater than what you came in with, and more in line with who you want to become. Last week, we received the message about what needs to change in this situation, this week we gain more clarity about how we can make that happen. And as mentioned, this week’s energies offer some excellent opportunities to communicate, plan, and envision what that future might look like.

The Hammer of Thor aspect includes the nervously-anticipated square between warrior god Mars and Saturn, god of time, law, societal structures and control. This is one of the defining aspects of 2020. Although it occurs every year for a couple of days, this year Mars and Saturn will square for FIVE WHOLE MONTHS. If you’ve heard astrologers saying that the hardest part of 2020 is yet to come, this is, in large part, what they’re referring to. Mars and Saturn are both extra powerful in their own signs now, and Saturn, retrograding since May 11, has been forcing us to review the structural issues in our lives to determine what is and is not working. As Mars prepares to retrograde also, he’s been slowing down and gaining intensity. During this time we’ve seen more violent protests, police brutality, racial violence, martial activity, reactivity and aggression in general. When he finally goes retrograde on around Sept 10 we’re likely to see those energies continue to escalate further, and for quite some time. This is the lowest expression of Mars energy.

At a personal level, under the influence of these energies, we’ll be best aided by directing our attention inward and to the past (retro = to go back) to reconsider, reassess, revise and reimagine the nature of our destiny and our desires, our previous courses of action, how we use our will to achieve them, how we express our anger when we’re thwarted, when and what we choose to fight for and how. These are the higher considerations of Mars energy. Mars is also in his highest expression as warrior energy when fighting for justice, protecting and defending those who do not have a voice or are unable to defend themselves, and rescuing and rebuilding in the aftermath of strife.

This energy can be seen on the global stage now, as Mars and his rebel general, warrior queens Black Moon Lilith and Eris, and his Centaurian advisor Chiron wage a battle against the systemic corruption and injustices that riddle the structural core of our societies. Governments, banks, corporations, patriarchy, hierarchies and capitalism are all signified by Saturn-ruled Capricorn. Saturn uses domination and repressive force to hold on to and extend his power; in mythology, he ate his own children to avoid ceding power to them. White supremacy, sexism, ableism, economic injustice, environmental exploitation and domination are all low-end Saturn in Capricorn energy.

Saturn has the upper hand for now in this dynamic but don’t be disheartened. He and Jupiter move out of Capricorn into Aquarius on the Summer/Winter Solstice of December 21, forming a Grand Conjunction that signals the beginning of a new roughly 200 year-long cycle that will govern the shape and trajectory of our social evolution on Earth. We are in the final dramatic phase of a 200 year-long era of Earth energy, during which we have colonised and oppressed the peoples who have been its wisest protectors in order to exploit and extract obscenely squandered wealth from now dangerously depleted resources. Hierarchies of wealthy, white, male, middle aged power and privilege have dominated in this era.

The Aquarian age will be VERY different although the transition will take time and be difficult. This new era of Air is being initiated with the aforementioned Aquarian conjunction and it will shape society’s direction for the next 20 years. It’s also one of the major entry points, I believe, into the famed Age of Aquarius, which is a different astrological age altogether, marked by the precession of the equinoxes, a roughly 26,000 year cycle in total, in which each age is made up of roughly 2000 years.

We are in the very last stages of a 2000 year Age of Pisces, which has been dominated by the relationship of our societies to spirituality: all of the world’s major religions emerged in this time and have shaped the social, philosophical and political structures of our societies. This new era of Air, which begins in Aquarius, is like a kickstart into the Age of Aquarius, shifting our focus towards community and the building of a more equal society. We’ll be working towards self-actualisation so that we can serve society best through the expression of our own unique gifts. The hierarchies of domination and control that characterise our current world will eventually collapse and be replaced (in approximately 50 years) by a new system of social order structured around decentralised networks of power. And the Aquarian Age will also be characterised by extraordinary technological innovation and advancement. This is the legacy we’re preparing for our children.

The Saturn/Mars tension is playing out in our personal lives in the areas where we want to move forward and get things done but feel thwarted or restricted. Our movements will continue to be restricted by forces beyond our control for the remainder of the year.  However, we can turn this constriction on its head by choosing to do the Saturnian work ourselves: establishing boundaries, reviewing structural issues, facing our fears, being disciplined about the work that we know is necessary at a personal level. To make the kind of social change that is the promise of Aquarius we will need our full power, and the way we access it is by doing the inner work.

These are big times. Whatever work we do now under the auspices of these Saturnian restrictions will set us up to hit the ground running when they finally lift, and to make much quicker and more meaningful progress, and on a major scale. Things are set to get worse before they get better, but the more we focus our attention inward to address the issues we know are there, the less likely we are to be impacted by external forces that will seek to do that work for us, and the quicker we’ll be able to access a fuller expression of our power.

Finally this weekend, Mars forms another much shorter-lived square with his lover Venus, goddess of harmony, pleasure, beauty, value, love and fairness. This aspect could bring about some tensions in relationships, but overall Mars is more receptive to the feminine now. The moon is also transiting Chiron this weekend, which suggests that any tension that does surface now might actually act as a gateway for some powerful healing. Mars is also flanked by those previously mentioned, powerful supporting energies, which are archetypally feminine, and represent the marginalised, neglected and unjustly treated in our world: Chiron the centaur, teacher of orphan heroes and wounded healer; Eris, sister of Mars, goddess of discord and defender of the ostracised and overlooked; and Black Moon Lilith, first wife of Adam who was demonised for refusing to be subservient to a man. The world is changing, friends. Although the going is slow and hard.

Nonetheless, there are always shining moments within these epic movements. We’ll continue to feel the positive influence of a beautiful grand Earth trine this week between Uranus in Taurus (innovations in relation to the material qualities of our lives) the Sun in Virgo (our ability to improve the way we do things) and Jupiter in Capricorn (the expansion of opportunities that result from the lessons of our previous efforts) so look out for possibilities to utilise these beneficial energies and nurture your power this week. They’re helping to prepare us for greatness ✨🌟🌕🌞

The possibility of transcendent love emerging from chaos…

This little painting feels like a fitting expression of the energies at play this week with today’s full moon in Pisces conjunct its mystical ruler Neptune, and I hope, dear friends, that you’re feeling some of these ‘transcendent love emerging from chaos’ kind of vibes...

The Pisces full moon (@ 3:20pm EST on September 2) conjunction with Neptune intensifies visionary, healing energy on one hand, and confusing, emotional and delusional energies on the other. Stay away from fake news, misinformation and hyperbole if you can and focus inwards on what feels deeply true. Full moons heighten energies and bring them to a peak so focusing on spiritually transformative visions of what’s possible now will be better than zoning in on unverified opinions, toxic commentary and misinformation from the outside. These simultaneously spiritual/delusional energies could permeate and influence the whole week. Focus on the mystical, transcendent and transformative. Meditate. Make art. Send love to the crazy going on outside.

It’s a moon to dream big about possibilities for your own life and the world. Cultivate small rituals that nourish your spirit and imagination. Plant seeds of intention for the coming months with an eye on the bigger picture. Enrich your authentic power by feeling in, heightening your sensitivity to the extraordinary and the mysterious, the strange magic of this moment and its unfathomable unfolding energies. Be visionary. What is it that you most want to create out of this time? And what might you need to do to make that happen?

As always in 2020, there’s much more going on in the skies than this full moon/Neptune conjunction alone, however. It’s also opposing Mercury, planet of writing, communication and ideas, in the sign of Virgo, sign of purifying processes, critical reflection and improvement, which bodes well for all forms of visionary, imaginative, emotional and healing-intentional writing, as well as for planning, organising towards a vision, and getting one’s ducks in a row. Write poetry, journal, have conversations with loved ones, write forward-thinking lists.

The full moon/Neptune opposition to Mercury also forms a mystic rectangle with another opposition that’s taking place between Venus, goddess of love, fairness and harmony, and Saturn, the boss planet of 2020 and current taskmaster of our lives. In Cancer, Venus seeks solace and harmony, both with family and at home, and she could well be feeling more emotional than usual. In this opposition she’s constrained by Saturn, god of rules and restrictions, hard work, discipline, time, and the things we fear. But we can use Saturn’s power to our advantage here by being disciplined about taking time for ourselves, by nurturing well-being and cultivating the relationships that will sustain us in the months of hard work ahead. Indulge in self-care, in Venusian baths, cosy comforts, hugs, and rest.

In his own sign of Capricorn, Saturn enforces the limitations that we’re all currently experiencing in our social, political and economic lives. Saturn’s conjunction with Pluto, planet of destruction and renewal, and Jupiter, who makes everything bigger than it would ordinarily be, until December 21st 2020 (when Saturn and Jupiter finally move into 0 degrees Aquarius), is transforming the structures of our societies from the ground up. But it’s a slow process, and not a fun one. The months ahead will require Saturnian hard work, resolve, persistence and grit, but what we create out of this moment will change the shape of our lives forever. Pluto destroys what no longer serves us and reveals the riches buried beneath. Jupiter, when it finally leaves Capricorn, promises expansion, beneficial opportunities and good fortune. But we’ve got work to do until then. And more beyond that to transform our societies of course although the energies will feel markedly different in Aquarius.

This week Saturn continues to square the warrior god Mars who’s gaining intensity before he turns retrograde in about 10 days. Counter forces of aggression and repression will continue to be intense but there’s also a possibility for something important to emerge from this engagement eventually as we see the power struggle continue to play out between the youth- and people-powered movements for justice and the controlling forces of government and corporate plutocracies, which have vested interests in making sure that things remain the same.

The sun in Virgo is also trine Uranus in Taurus this week, with the possibility for unexpectedly positive, synchronistic opportunities emerging out of nowhere.  Keep your eyes peeled for them. All in all it’s a shining window of a week, which offers us some creative and imaginative reprieve as well as the opportunity to begin crystallising intentions so they can be acted upon in the next leg of this journey. Indulge in these energies and let them charge your batteries. Dream big.
