In the philosophical study of aesthetics until the 1900s empathy (or rather einfühlung) described figurative, naturalistic art and the act of feeling into an artwork in order to perceive the emotions inscribed in it by the artist. And yet, since the 1500s, empathy's cousin sympathy referred to those magical laws in which ‘like produces like’ or ‘an effect resembles its cause’. This Tarot poses the question: might an empathetic magic that feels into differences that make a difference also exist? An empathetic magic that uses imaginative engagement to transform our perception of what is and can be?
